The quality of the BEM model is highly dependent on the accuracy of the model input data. The sources for the input data will vary depending on the stage of the project design. This page provides a high-level overview of common data sources used for modeling, but for much more information, refer to the Preparing Model Inputs section of this website which provides detailed guidance on how to prepare inputs for various components of a model and discusses data sources from which to gather the input data.

Early stages of design

Many assumptions must be made in the early design stages because specific materials and equipment selections may not have been made yet. However, there are many excellent sources to help with making these assumptions. These may include:

  • Energy codes
  • Prototype models
  • References and guidelines
  • Manufacturers’ literature
  • Colleagues
  • Online forums
  • Software defaults

Detailed stages of design

As the design progresses into design development and construction documents, the model should represent the actual design of the building. This information can be found from:

  • Plans – architecture, mechanical, electrical, plumbing
  • Specifications
  • Basis of design
  • Sequence of operations
  • Owner, designers
